The Tika & Cross
We can't live without symbols; however, when we put them in the place that which they are POINTING TO, then we miss the blessing or experience we set out to discover in the first place. What a paradox to see a soldier in battle firing off rounds, killing enemy combatants with the Christian cross swaying back and forth around his neck.
The picture of a Hindu woman with a sporting a tika while burning a Pakistani flag carries a similar message.
The message is that we've embraced the symbol and the metaphors, but we've missed the message. The tika was originally a red spot which was a sign that a priest would paint on the brow of a visitor to the temple. Later the tika became a standard part of the costume of a Hindu woman. But even before that the tika represented the "third eye" and a sign of enlightenment.
What's happened to the transformation of the cross and the enlightenment of the tika?
What has caused the shift from deep inner consciousness embrace to jewelry (the tika also comes in a pendant to be worn as a necklace) and costume enhancements? Have we become so numb to the things of the spirit that we've lost track of true reality? Is religion just a game of gaining adherents- especially from other religions?
For many the answer is YES! 
Looking at just the cross and the Christian perspective isn't my goal to not ADVERTISE Jesus but to BE Jesus. It's been said that Mother Teresa never once tried to convert a Hindu or Muslim to Catholicism, nor did she teach her sisters in Calcutta to PROMOTE Jesus, but instead, to BE Jesus! Where have we gone off the reservation and forgotten the reason we left in the first place?
Symbols are important in life, but they only POINT to the reality! Are you living your life symbolically or realistically?
