What is a Rubicon? What does it mean to cross the Rubicon?

I know that the Rubicon is a river in Italy, (and if that is the extent of your answer, you're a putz) but what significance, if any, does it have in literature or philosophy? Does "crossing the Rubicon" refer to conquering something or achieving something, sort of like "meeting his Waterloo", etc.? Fill me in, yo.

Rubicon is a river crossed by Julius Caesar in 49 B.C.
At the time, he had two choices. To cross the Rubicon, confront Pompey and begin a bloody civil war to become a ruler of Rome or retreat, thus obeying the Roman Senate. He chose to cross the Rubicon.
The expression, crossing the Rubicon means that there is no going back, once a line or a point in time, however you'd like to interpret it, is crossed.
