why is Our Lady of Guadalupe important in a mexican culture?? and why is she important to hispanic mexican peo?
It is very special for Mexicans. Because it has a miraculous origin and because it is the reason of the greatest mass conversion to Christianity in history.
In 1531 the Virgin Mary appeared to an Indian widower called Juan Diego and God worked the miracle that left her image imprinted in his mantle. (I’ll tell you more about the story later) By 1541, just ten years after the apparitions, there were ten million Indians who had been converted from paganism.
A priest of the time wrote: "Had I not witnessed it with my own eyes, I should not venture to report it. I have to affirm that another priest and myself baptized in five days fourteen thousand two hundred and odd souls." The Indians would come out of the villages looking for the priests begging to be instructed in the faith and baptized!
It is important to take into account that just some decades before the apparitions, the Spanish had conquered Mexico. Many of them had tried to force their religion and culture on the Indians with (obviously!) horrible results. The Indians just grew more and more resentful and violent, and the Spanish answered back with even more bloodshed…. Obviously the message of Christianity went out of the window, the Indians could not accept the strange God…specially because it was the God of their oppressors. PLUS the few good faithful missionaries that arrived couldn’t communicate the message of Christ because of the cultural barriers…for the Indians, Jesus was a “white” God.
The few faithful missionaries couldn’t go beyond the cultural barrier. But Jesus can! And just as he sent Paul and Peter in the past, he sent one of his disciples to do some evangelizing! This time He sent His mom to do the job for him. So she appears to Juan Diego and to make a VERY long story short at the end her image was miraculously imprinted in Juan Diego’s mantle… we still have that mantle with her image, it is in Mexico city…and it is breathtaking.
